Photosynthetic performances of transplanted Cypripedium flavum plants

چکیده
To explore the conservation and cultivation of Cypripedium flavum at comparatively lower altitudes, a study on variations in photosynthetic characteristics was conducted on C. flavum plants from the high mountains of the eastern Himalayas. Plants of same size (6 leaves, 35-40 cm height) were selected from Tianshengqiao (alt. 3,450 m) and planted at the gardens at Zhongdian (alt. 3,200 m) and Kunming (alt. 1,900 m). The leaves of C. flavum at Tianshengqiao and Zhongdian exhibited higher photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, apparent quantum yield, and carboxylation efficiency than their counterparts at Kunming. The optimal temperatures for photosynthesis of C. flavum plants growing at Tianshengqiao, Zhongdian, and Kunming were 18, 19 and 21°C, respectively. The optimal temperature also increased with increasing photosynthetically active radiation (PAR). However, the photosynthetic responses of C. flavum to PAR were similar at the three sites. The photosynthesis reached light saturation at the PAR of 746-832 μmol ms. The inability of C. flavum to acclimate to higher temperature resulted in the depression of photosynthetic rate at the lower altitude (Kunming). The results suggest that C. flavum adapts poorly to the warmer temperatures at low altitudes. It can be cultivated at a lower attitude, but proper agronomical methodology will need to be developed for better growth.

Slow photosynthetic induction and low photosynthesis in Paphiopedilum armeniacum are related to its lack of guard cell chloroplast and peculiar stomatal anatomy.
Paphiopedilum and Cypripedium are close relatives in the subfamily Cypripedioideae. Cypripedium leaves contain guard cell chloroplasts, whereas Paphiopedilum do not. It is unclear whether the lack of guard cell chloroplasts affects photosynthetic induction, which is important for understory plants to utilize sunflecks. To understand the role of guard cell chloroplasts in photosynthetic inductio...

Lady’s slipper orchids ( Cypripedium spp.) are rare terrestrial plants that grow throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere. Like all orchids, they require mycorrhizal fungi for germination and seedling nutrition. The nutritional relationships of adult Cypripedium mycorrhizae are unclear; however, Cypripedium distribution may be limited by mycorrhizal specificity, whether this specificity occ...

متن کاملDevelopment of microsatellite markers for Cypripedium tibeticum (Orchidaceae) and their applicability to two related species1
Premise of the study To investigate genetic diversity and structure, microsatellite markers were developed and characterized for Cypripedium tibeticum, an endangered orchid species, and their utility tested in two relatives: C. flavum and C. bardolphianum. Methods and Results Candidate microsatellite loci were isolated based on next-generation sequencing. We identified 20 polymorphic loci wit...
متن کاملPhotosynthetic, morphological, and reproductive variations in Cypripedium tibeticum in relation to different light regimes in a subalpine forest
Cypripedium tibeticum, a subalpine orchid species, inhabits various habitats of subalpine forests, mainly including the forest edge (FE), forest gap (FG), and understory (UST), which have significantly different light intensities (FE > FG > UST). However, the ecological and physiological influences caused by different light regimes in this species are still poorly understood. In the present stu...
